Income Tax Refund: How to get it*
A majority of people pay income tax and file tax returns. What they dislike is the time it takes to get a refund if due. Here are a few ways to expedite the process to the extent you can:
· While filing your return, enter details of your bank account, such as the account number, branch and the MICR code. This way the refund will be directly credited to that bank account. You won't need to fill out a pay-in slip, attach the refund order and personally visit your bank.
· If you have not received your refund order/amount credited to your bank account, write to the income tax office enclosing details of your return. Or better still; visit your assessing officer with a copy of the acknowledgement of your return.
·If these efforts fail, you can contact the Ombudsman - a government-appointed official who will take up the issue on your behalf and hold the tax department accountable and answerable. Be sure - you will get your refund.
·Choose to efile. When you efile, it quickens the process, increasing the likelihood of you getting a faster refund.
With the government increasingly turning to the internet to get work done more efficiently, the time is ripe for even taxpayers to use technology to their advantage.
