Efiling Using a Digital Signature

The easiest, quickest and smartest way to efile your income tax return is by using a digital signature.

 

How it works

 

To efile using digital signature, you need to prepare your return electronically. Once your return is generated, you must attach your digital signature to it. After attaching the digital signature, upload your return onto the Income Tax Department's server. You get a prompt acknowledgement via email. This is your first and final acknowledgement and marks the completion of the income tax filing process. On the other hand, if you efile without a digital signature, you are emailed an ITR-Verification Form (ITR-V). Print and sign the Form. Send this signed Form in an A4 size envelope (without folding) to the I-T Office at the appropriate address. You will receive the final acknowledgement via email, for your records.

 

How to get a Digital Signature

 

A digital signature is contained in a digital signature certificate (DSC). A DSC is issued by a Certifying Authority, e.g. e-Mudhra. To efile an income tax return, you need to obtain a Class ll or Class lll DSC from one of the Certifying Authorities. Certain service providers like Taxsmile offer efiling plans that include the option to efile using digital signature.

Digital Signature is created using two keys
One is public key and the other is private key. Private key is with the person signing and the public key is for verification by the concerned department where forms are uploaded along with signature to verify the authenticity of signer of form.
